Side by Side is a ministry of Shady Grove UMC dedicated to families of children with special needs.
Our goal is to include children with disabilities in our church community by providing loving support and the safe environment they need to participate as fully as possible so that they may hear the message of Jesus.
We provide assessment of the needs of children with disabilities through a Parent/Guardian Questionnaire and an observation by our Coordinator. The Coordinator then works with the parents, shepherds, and teachers to include the child in our current ministries.
Side-by-side utilizes the Buddy system as a way of including special needs children in the life of our church. The children are paired up with a Buddy who is part of the Side-by-Side Team, providing the opportunity to develop a relationship with the child and family in order to minister to them more fully. The Buddy will assist the child during their Sunday school classes and other activities.
This system not only benefits the special needs child but also enables the parents and siblings of the special needs child to attend their own Sunday school class, worship service or other activity.
